A local childcare center applied for a Shape Up mini grant last year to start a garden on site. The Washington State University Master Gardeners teach an hour long curriculum once a week to over 55 kids aged 5-12 during the summer months. The garden is in year two and many logistical changes have been made this year to try and improve food quantity and reduce weeds. The fruits and vegetables are planted, cared for and harvested by the youth and used in the kitchen for meals. Any excess produce can be taken home by parents or is donated to the local food bank. |
